Doss, Raper, Plott, Nininger, Edmonds & Mosley Post Calico Coatings Cup Wins at the "Dirty MO"

 The racers of the Calico Coatings Carolina’s CUP returned to Mooresville Dragway for two days of racing this past weekend. Defending weekly TOP Eliminator champion “00” Charlie Doss of Statesville, NC picked up the big $4,000.00 paycheck Saturday defeating Tommy Plott of Winston-Salem, NC. Doss, scored his second “Dirty MO” win of the year, running a dead-on 4.910 on a 4.910 dial-in at 137 MPH to stop the quicker 4.77 ET at 142 MPH charge of Plott. Both drivers riding in Race Tech built Dragsters. Tommy’s son Chris Plott of Winston-Salem, NC was the lone semi-finalist in his “70 Mercury Cougar. “King Coug’s” wouldn’t be denied the Foot Brake class victory, as he scored his second Calico Coatings CUP win of season at Mooresville Saturday. Plott ran a 6.91 ET at 98 MPH to defeat young gun Tim Alexander of Mocksville, NC in his 1981 Chevrolet Malibu. This also made Alexander’s second straight CUP final round appearance of the year at Mooresville. Former Mooresville Foot Brake champion Jeff Flood of Mocksville, NC placed a strong semi-final position with his Chevrolet Vega. Third generation drag racer Justin Edmonds of Statesville, NC picked up the Calico Coatings Junior Dragster win defeating the “Blowin Money” team of Taylor Davis from Thomasville, NC. Young Edmonds turned the 1/8th mile at Mooresville in 8.49 seconds at 73 MPH to score his second “Dirty MO” win of the year. Brittany Sprinkles of China Grove, NC came in third. In special “HI-Rollers” action, David Dean of Mt. Carmel, TN defeated Travis Harvey of Burlington, NC for the all “Open Bodied Hi-Rollers” win. Mike Goble of Granite Falls, NC took home the “Foot Brake” Hi-Rollers win beating out Tim “Tumbleweed” Douglas of Yadkinville, NC. The Junior Dragster Hi-Rollers win Saturday went to Tesz Powell of Morganton, NC defeating “Main Event” runner-up Taylor Davis.

 The classic 1955 Chevrolet of Jimmy Raper from Easley, SC, beat out all the Dragsters Sunday for his first Calico Coatings CUP Top Eliminator win. The “Double Nickel” driver Raper defeated Mooresville’s own Doug Leazer in a Chevy powered Dragster. Jimmy ran a dead-on time of 6.38 ET on a 6.38 Dial-in at 107 MPH to beat Leazer at the stripe by .006 thousandths of a second. Joel Mattox of Piedmont, SC and Joe Gary from Greenville, SC were both TOP semi-finalists in Dragsters. Chip Nininger from Boones Mill, VA picked up his first career Foot Brake win driving Hank McGee’s owned Chevrolet. Nininger defeated current PBM/Erson Series point’s leader Wade Holbrook of Lexington, NC. Holbrook, driving his Chevrolet red-lighted on the start, giving Nininger the “dead-on the dial-in” win. Darrell Powell of Morganton, NC was the lone semi-finalist in his Chevrolet Chevelle. Tyler Mosley of Inman, SC scored second Junior Dragster class win of the year at the “Dirty MO”. The third generation drag racer Mosley defeated Zach Grant of Kernersville, NC in his “Getter Done” Dragster. Chase Maunel of Winston-Salem, NC and Adam Tapp of Greer, SC was semi-finalist.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Results from Mooresville's First Cup Race March 24-25

Charlie Doss and Terry Long Takes Hank Thomas Performance TOP Wins; Chad Dotson and Chris Plott Capture Sunoco Race Fuels Foot Brake Victories; C.J. Tapp and Jesse Warren Post First Trailers of the East Coast Junior Dragster Wins.

  This past weekend kicked off the Calico Coatings Carolina’s CUP race series at Mooresville Dragway. This all new six race series hosted between Mooresville and Farmington Dragway had over 240 racers in attendance from five different states in the southeast this past weekend.

Taking the Hank Thomas Performance TOP Eliminator win on Saturday was 2006 Mooresville track champion Charlie Doss of Statesville, NC. “00” Doss, driving his Race Tech Dragster posted a winning time of a 4.89 ET at 135 MPH to defeat Joel Maddox of Piedmont, SC in a Dragster. Stuart Smith from Lenior, NC was a strong third place finisher in his Chevy powered Dragster. Terry Long from Raeford, NC captured the $4,000.00 Hank Thomas Performance TOP win on Sunday. Long a former big money race winner at Mooresville drove his Undercover Dragster to the win over Ronnie Dotson from Mills Springs, NC. Long posted a dead-on run of 4.73 ET on a 4.73 index at 140.93 MPH in his Beal Racing Engines entry. Bobby McKinney of Bakersville, NC driving a Dragster and John Furr of Oakboro, NC were both semi-finalists. In the weekend points championship for the driver that makes the most rounds. Saturday night’s runner-up Joel Maddox won the competition.

Chad Dotson of Mills Springs, NC took the Sunoco Race Fuels Foot Brake class win over Tim Alexander from Mocksville, NC Dotson in his Chevrolet Nova was given the win off the start as first time Mooresville finalist Alexander went red (foul start) in his Chevrolet Malibu. Tim Griffin of Richlands, VA and Jeff Longhaney of Fayetteville, NC both placed in the semi-finals. Former Mooresville track champion Chris Plott of Winston-Salem, NC drove his Mercury Cougar to the Sunoco race fuels victory on Sunday. Plott, sporting a new paint scheme and race motor, defeat Michael Beard of Seagrove, NC in his “Devil Dusted” Plymouth for the $2,000.00 paycheck. The “King Cougar” ran a winning 6.84 ET at 96 MPH to hold off the Staging Light Graphics Duster of Beard. Kelly Stevens of Hickory, NC placed a solid third place position in his Chevrolet Malibu. Taking the special bonus Foot Brake Weekend point’s championship was Saturday’s big winner Chad Dotson.

 The Tapp Brothers C.J. and Adam from Greer, SC dominated Saturday’s Trailers of the East Coast Junior Dragster action at Mooresville. Older brother C.J. took a starting line advantage and used it to run an 8.01 ET at 71 MPH to defeat little brother Adam. Brystel Mosley of Inman, SC drove her Paul’s Transmissions sponsored Junior to a strong third place finish.  Third generation drag racer Jesse Warren from Concord, NC scored the win Sunday in the Trailers of the East Coast Junior Dragster division. Warren driving his Pitts Repair Service entry defeated Dillon Winkler of China Grove, NC in the finals.  Brooke Hall of Spartanburg, SC was the lone semi-finalist with her Fulton Competition entry.  C.J. Tapp also took the overall weekend points title for the Trailers of the East Coast Junior’s division.
