Ronnie Freeman and Tim Byrd Post NC Drag Racing Hall of Fame Wins; It
was an all Sweet Sisters Final in Junior Dragster and Bill Crane Wins Again
Racing resume this past weekend at Mooresville Dragway in the PBM/Erson Race Series. This was also one of seven North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame races for TOP Eliminator and Foot Brake division racers. The NC Drag racing Hall of Fame was started last year to recognize the accomplishments of persons that have made a positive role in North Carolina drag racing. All class winners at each of these races will be recognize February at the 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee ceremonies in Greensboro, NC.
Taking the Doug Herbert Performance TOP Eliminator and NC Hall of Fame win was the veteran Ronnie Freeman of Shelby, NC driving his 1967 Chevrolet Nova. Freeman defeated eighteen year old Wendell Bowie II of Statesville, NC driving his ECP backed Chevy powered Dragster. This made Bowie’s first Mooresville TOP Eliminator final round appearance since moving up from the Junior Dragster ranks. The two time Mooresville Drake Coatings Junior Dragster champion red-light (foul) on the start giving Freeman the $2,000.00 win. Matthew McDaniel of Forest City, NC and Doug Leazer of Mooresville, NC both driving Dragsters were semi-finalist.
When you’re hot, you’re hot! A red hot Tim Byrd of Lexington, NC scored his second straight Foot Brake win Saturday night in PBM Performance Parts/ Erson Cams points’ action. Byrd, a former Mooresville champion drove his Chevrolet Monza to the win over Jonathan Surratt of Charlotte, NC in his Chevrolet Chevelle. Surratt, making his first career “Dirty MO” finals, red-lighted by one thousandths at the start thus giving Byrd his second win of the year. Tim Finney of Concord, NC and reigning Foot Brake champion Paul Shell, Jr. of Lexington, NC were both semi-finalist.
How Sweet was the Drake Coating Junior Dragster finals? It was sister’s Taylor and Samantha Sweet, so. For only the second time this year, Mooresville had an all sibling finals, this one the Sweet sister’s from Mooresville, NC. It would be Taylor getting the nod over older sister Samantha for her first Drake Coating/ Dirty MO victory. Samantha jumped the start (red-lighting) as sis Taylor ran a right on 8.65 ET at 72 MPH winning time. Third generation drag racer Justin Edmonds of Statesville, NC was the lone semi-finalist.
Bill Crane of Morganton, NC continued his domination of Real Street scoring his fourth win of the year. In an all Chevrolet Malibu final round match up, Crane defeated Kelly Stevens of Hickory, NC.

The Quick 8 Pro Mod racers returned to Mooresville Dragway this past Saturday night, June 9th. Taking his second straight association win of the season was Buzz Varner of Graham, NC driving Don Plemmons 104/WTQR Corvette. Varner ran a 4.10 ET at 173 MPH to defeat defending Quick 8 champion Randy Weatherford of Providence, NC on the 1/8th mile drag course. Rod Houck of Clemmons, NC and Ronnie Hood of Hickory, NC were semi-finalist.
In the red hot PBM/Erson Race Series at Mooresville, Stuart Smith of Hickory, NC captured his first Doug Herbert Performance Parts TOP Eliminator win of the season. Veteran racer Smith drove his Chevrolet powered Dragster to the win over seventeen year old David Dean from Waxhaw, NC. He ran a 4.94 ET at 135 MPH to hold off a quicker Dean in his “Fire Child” Dragster. 2006 Farmington TOP champion Mark “Pork” Jones of East Bend, NC was the lone semi-finalist in his Dragster. Billy Ray Varner, Jr. of Stanley, NC continues to lead the Doug Herbert TOP Eliminator division after seven PBM Performance/ Erson Cams points’ races.
Wade Holbrook of Lexington, NC collected his first PBM/Erson Race Series win at Mooresville in the Foot Brake division. He used a better reaction time off the start to hold off former IHRA World Champion Deat Buckner from Madison, NC for the victory. Holbrook ran a 5.92 ET at 113 MPH in his Chevrolet Vega to defeat Buckner in his Chevy powered ’74 Jaugar. Scott Macy of Randleman, NC placed a strong semi-final finish in his Dodge Cornet. The win by Wade has placed him tied with his son Brian Holbrook for first in the PBM/Erson race series Foot Brake standings.
Third generation drag racer Justin Edmonds of Statesville, NC scored his first Drake Coatings Junior Dragster win of year at Mooresville. Edmonds in his Wayne’s Automotive sponsored entry defeated Tesz Powell from Morganton, NC. Former Mooresville track champion Corey Leazer finished third. Brittany Sprinkles of China Grove, NC with her quarter final finish is now tied for first in the Drake Coatings Junior Dragster division with Taylor Davis of Thomasville, NC
Seventeen year Colt Buckner of Madison, NC picked up his second Real Street division win of the year stopping multi-time class winner Bill Crane of Morganton, NC. Misty Reid of Troutman, NC placed a strong third.
