A large
crowd was on hand this past Saturday night, July 21st
at Mooresville Dragway to welcome back the Classic Gear Jammers.
It had been over eight years since the high whining, wheel
standing; stick shift cars had run at the 1/8th mile
Rowan County facility. Taking the Gear Jamming Main event win
was veteran Tom Talmon of Lexington, NC driving his 1955
Chevrolet. Talmon blasted a winning 6.15 ET at 108 MPH to defeat
Tim Jones from Rural Hall, NC in his 1970 Chevrolet Nova. 7 time
IHRA World Champion Mike Boyles of King, NC and Adam Hull of
Mount Airy, NC placed in the semi-finals. Long time gear jamming
ace Jessie Pittman of Midland, NC drove his “Kansas Twister”
1964 ½ Ford Mustang to the Second Chance Gear Jammer win.
Pittman ran a 6.66 ET at 97 MPH to stop Brett Keesee of Elgin,
SC in his 1978 Chevrolet Monza. Keith Steelman of Cleveland, NC
placed thirdSeventeen
year old David Dean of Waxhaw, NC scored his first Doug Herbert
TOP Eliminator win defeating Rick Mann of Trinity, NC. Dean
driving his “Fire Child” Chevy powered Dragster ran a 4.79 ET at
137 MPH to stop the 1968 Race Tech built Camaro Roadster of
Mann. Jerry Tomlinson of Connelly Springs, NC was the lone
semi-finalist. Billy Varner, Jr. of Stanley, NC leads the PBM/Erson
Race Series after ten events in TOP Eliminator division.
Jason
Phillips of East Bend, NC scored his second “Dirty MO” win of
the year defeating Matthew Hager of Concord, NC. Phillips
driving his “Black Widow” 1990 Chevrolet Camaro had won earlier
this year at Mooresville’s Div.9 IHRA Pro Am race in the Hot Rod
division. This marked the first time this year that he won in
the Foot Brake division at Mooresville. He ran a 6.23 ET at 104
MPH to stop the 8.09 ET at 82 MPH run of Hager and his 1973
Chevrolet Nova. Reigning Foot Brake champion Paul Shell, Jr.
finished a strong third in his 1966 Chevrolet Nova. Tim Byrd of
Lexington, NC continues to lead the Foot Brake standings in the
PBM Performance/ Erson Cams series at Mooresville.
Former track champion Corey Leazer of Mooresville, NC picked up
his first Drake Coating Junior Dragster win of the season and
took over the number one spot in the standings. Leazer, a third
generation racer in his “Shut Up & Race Motorsports” Dragster
defeated Samantha Sweet of Mooresville, NC, who was making her
second straight Junior Dragster finals at the “Dirty MO”. Leazer
ran a 7.94 ET at 79 MPH to hold off Sweet’s 8.08 ET at 78 MPH
run. Taylor Davis of Thomasville, NC was the lone semi-finalist.

Junior Dragster standout Chase King of Kannapolis, NC picked up
his first Real Street win for “street legal cars” Saturday
driving Dale Green’s 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle. King ran a 9.63 ET
at 65 MPH to stop the 10.53 ET at 66 MPH of Misty Reid of
Troutman, NC in a Buick. Multi-time Real Street winner Bill
Crane of Morganton, NC and Robert Ellison of Sophia, NC
