Great Racers, Weather and Time!!!! at the 2nd Annual POOR Boys and Gals Nationals

Over 200 different entries were on hand for this past Labor Day weekend’s 2nd Annual Poor Boys & Gals Nationals at Mooresville Dragway.  More than $25,500.00 was up for grabs in the three days of racing in the TOP Eliminator, Foot Brake and Junior Dragster divisions. Saturday and Sunday was also important PBM Performance Products/Erson Cams points series races for all divisions.

 

 Saturday- Travis Varner, Tim Byrd, Tyler Mayhew and Michael Goodnight Post Wins

  Taking home his first ever big money TOP Eliminator win on Saturday was seventeen year Travis Varner from Stanley, NC in his Mopar powered Dragster.  Young Travis defeated veteran racer Ken Batchelor from Leland, NC in his small block powered Dragster for the $3,000.00 top prize. Batchelor red-lighted on the start by three thousandths giving third generation drag racer Varner his second “Dirty MO” win of the year. Big Jerry Brewer of Lumberton, NC was the lone semi-finalist in his Race Tech Dragster. Tim Byrd of Lexington, NC took his Chevrolet Monza to his third PBM/Erson Race Series Foot Brake win of the year Saturday night. The former Mooresville champion defeated another former “Dirty MO” champion Chris Plott of Winston-Salem, NC for the all important Foot Brake points win. Plott, in his Mercury Cougar red-lighted off the start giving the “Byrd Man” the win and the points lead back in Foot Brake. Jackson Purser of Monroe, NC was the lone semi-finalist with his Mercury Cougar. Tyler Mayhew of Indian Trails, NC scored his first Drake Coatings Junior Dragster win defeating Taylor Davis of Thomasville, NC. Mayhew ran a 7.90 ET at 81 MPH to hold of the “Blowin Money” Dragster of Davis with a 7.93 ET at 80 MPH run. Heather Fesperman of Salisbury, NC was the lone junior semi-finalist. Michael Goodnight of Landis, NC picked up his third straight Real Street win defeating second generation drag racer Colt Buckner of Winston-Salem, NC. Goodnight ran a 7.62 ET at 89 MPH with his Chevrolet Nova to hold off Buckner’s 9.08 ET at 76 MPH charge in his Chevy powered Jaguar.

 

Sunday- Chris Plott, Ricky Greer, Mitchell Harkey and Goodnight Again Take Wins

 On Sunday, Chris Plott of Winston-Salem, NC drove his dad’s Race Tech Dragster to the $5,000.00 TOP Eliminator win over veteran Joe Flynn of Monroe, NC in his Race Tech Dragster. “Cougar Daddy” Plott used a better reaction time and ran a 4.68 ET at 144 MPH to beat out the dead-on 4.80 ET on a 4.80 dial run of “Smokin Joe” Flynn. Of all the hundred races that Pott had won this marked the first “Big Money” win for the former Mooresville Foot Brake champ. Mike Harstad of N. Charlestown, SC was the lone semi-finalist in his Dragster. “Fat Boy” Ricky Greer from Winston-Salem, NC picked up the “Poor Boys” win in Foot Brake over the “Hit Man” Michael Spaugh of Advance, NC. Greer in his Chevy powered Ford Fairlane ran a 6.98 ET at 78 MPH to beat out Spaugh’s 8.67 ET at 74 MPH run in his Chevrolet Nova. Kelly Stevens of Hickory, NC was the lone semi-finalist with his Chevrolet Camaro. Mitchell Harkey of China Grove, NC scored his second Drake Coatings Junior Dragster win defeating “Dirty MO” newcomer Alicia Charette of Evans, GA. Harkey ran a 7.97 ET at 80 MPH to hold off a quicker 7.93 ET at 81 charge of Charette. Young Harkey continues to lead the chase for the 2007 Drake Coatings Junior Dragster championship, with two races remaining. Celeste Parris of Waynesville, NC was the lone Junior Dragster semi-finalist. The unstoppable Michael Goodnight of Landis, NC drove his Chevrolet Nova to a fourth straight Real Street victory. Goodnight defeated Tim Finney of Kannapolis, NC in is S-10 Chevrolet Truck for the street legal win.

 

Varner, Gary, Finney and Hebert Pick-Up "High Roller" Victories at the "Dirty MO"

 In the special “High Roller” races Sunday night, the Varner Brothers squared of in the finals of the Open Bodied race. A red hot Travis Varner coming off a big win Saturday night faced off with older brother Billy Ray Varner III in this all Mopar performance match up. Both were nearly dead even at the start with "Trav" hitting a .002 reaction time and Billy Ray a .003 light. The younger Varner’s 5.12 on a 5.12 stopped the 4.92 ET on a 4.91 dial of the thirds. IHRA Summit Super Series World Champion Joe Gary of Greenwood, SC drove his dad’s Chevrolet Camaro to the “High Roller” Door Car win over Dap Morrison of Statesville, NC in his brother’s Chevrolet Vega. Dap’s wheel standing Vega red-lighted on the start by just two thousandths thus giving Gary the automatic “Dirty MO” win.

 Matt Finney of Kannapolis, NC picked up the “High Roller” win in the Foot Brake class defeating Jim Wood of Laurens, SC. Wood in his Chevrolet Chevelle red-lighted off the start giving Finney his first “Dirty MO” win of the year in his Chevrolet Nova.

 In the special heads-up 7.90 Junior Dragster index race it was an all Charette-Hebert showdown to decide the winner. Ricky Hebert of Evans, GA posted the better reaction time to better his sister Alicia Charette for a first “Dirty MO” victory. He ran a winning 7.92 ET at 80 MPH to stay in front of her 7.90 on a 7.90 time.

 

Monday- Trevor Denton, Michael Spaugh and Travis Maine Take Wins on "Labor Day"

  Trevor Denton from Bristol, VA picked up his first ever “Dirty MO” TOP Eliminator victory on Monday defeating Drew Phillips of N. Charlestown, SC. After years of frustration at Mooresville, Denton turned that all into a big $3,000.00 with his Race Tech Dragster. Phillips making his first ever Mooresville finals red-light at the start with his Chevy powered Dragster. Multi-time IHRA World Champion Steve Furr of Harrisburg, NC was the lone TOP Eliminator semi-finalist in his Dragster.

 The “Hit Man” Michael Spaugh of Advance, NC wouldn’t be denied a win before the weekend was over at Mooresville Dragway. Spaugh used a better reaction time off the start to defeat Jeff Taylor of Laurens, SC for his second “Dirty MO” win of the year. He ran a winning 8.73 on an 8.73 at 75 MPH in his Chevrolet Nova to beat out a dead-on Taylor in his S-10 Chevrolet Truck. Sunday night’s “High Roller” Runner-up Jim Wood of Laurens, SC was a semi-finalist, along with Michael Spaugh in his second entry.

 Travis Maine of Gates, NC made his first trip to Mooresville a winning one, taking the Drake Coatings Junior Dragster victory. Maine ran a 7.96 ET at 82 MPH to defeat two “Dirty MO” winner this year Dillon Winkler of China Grove, NC. A red hot Alicia Charette of Evans, GA again placed in the money taking the semi-finals in Junior Dragster.
