Two former Mad Dawg runner-up’s, Burlington, NC’s Ronnie Gardner and Kannapolis, NC’s David Lambert, made up the “Dawg” finals at Mooresville Dragway in the annual DOORCARpalooza. Both drivers had their hands full in a “funny car” style pedal fest finals. Gardner in “Diamond” Jack Gaddy’s Chevrolet Camaro hit a .009 reaction time off the start but got out of shape after the 60ft. The “JunkYard Dawg” Lambert Chevy Cavalier moved, but a bad stumble in the rpm’s coming up killed all reaction. That didn’t stop him as he seen an out of shape Gardner out of the gas. That’s when Ronnie got back on the gas of his 762 cu.in. motor with 4 stages of nitrous to stay ahead of Lambert. The finish line margin of victory was .011 thousandths in what was the strangest but closest races of the day. Only at the Mad Dawg!
David Campbell of Oxford, NC lead all the Mad Dawgs with a 4.24 ET at a new speed record of 179 MPH in his Eagle Racing Engines, Campbell

Trucking & Repair Pontiac Grand Am. He was up ended in the semi’s by the Gardner and Gaddy Camaro on a hole shot win. “Lil Daddy” Jason Harris of Pittsboro, NC in his 632 Albert Racing Engines Pontiac was five thousandths too quick at the start giving the “Junk Yard” Dawg the easy ride to the finals.

Joel Douglas of Statesville, NC drove Anthony Sherrills Cavalier to the non-qualifiers "Lil Dawg" win over Jamie Chappell of Boonville, NC. It was another pedal fest finals as Douglas ran a 4.66 ET at 156 MPH to beat out Chappell who had ran a 4.32 ET in the first round. Young Guns Greg Patilio, Jr and Mike Heath driving the "Kid" Jones Olds made up the other four car shootout

Using Eagle Racing Engine power in the former Greg Anderson Pontiac Grand Am, David Campbell was the “King of Speed’ at Mooresville going 179 MPH three times. Campbell also set low ET of the meet in his Campbell Trucking & Repair Pontiac Grand Am with a 4.22. Using the 1022 Good Year tire (slick) also help Campbell speed down the Mooresville 1/8th mile  to a new Mad Dawg record. David lost a heart breaker to the Gardner/Gaddy team in the semi’s. Ronnie used a holeshot to beat him by .022 at the stripe(4.22 ET for Campbell to Gardner’s 4.24 ET). Will Campbell and the “Thunder wolf” be the first dawg into the 180 MPH range?

Two former Dirty Mo “ All Door Car” race winner’s Rick Whaley of Reidsville, NC and Scottie Keller of Mooresville, NC squared off in the TOP Doors finals. Defending TOP Doorcarpalooza winner and runner-up Keller had the family’s Chevrolet Nova in the finals once again for the second year in arrow. He again had two entries left in at four cars and ended up running himself. In the other semi-final round match up, Whaley in his Chevrolet Camaro defeated “brother” John Furr of Oakboro, NC in his Chevrolet Nova. In the finals, young gun Scottie Keller would go red by just a few thousandths to the veteran Rick Whaley. This was a special night for Keller, as he was present a special award for his double up finish from last year.

“The King Cougar” is back!  Chris Plott of Winston-Salem, NC got back on track at the DoorCarpalooza taking the Foot Brake Doors victory over Scott “the Kid” Yates from Gold Hill, NC. This was an all FoMoCo match with Plott in his Ford powered Mercury Cougar and Yates in his Ford Mustang. The reigining champ Pott used a better reaction time to beat out Yates for his first “Dirty Mo” win of the year. Joe Thompson of Mooresville, NC in a Plymouth Barracuda and Matt Finney of China Grove, NC in a Chevy Nova were semi-finalist.

Top Dragster driver Wendell Bowie II came back from the beach early to take the Real Street win in his Ford  Mustang. May have a new door car driver here!

Bunton Prevails in the “Battle of Statesville Friday Night Grudge Match” Over Morrison; Young Patilio Fills In for a Wounded Warrior

A large crowd was on hand for Grudge Match II Friday Night at the “Dirty Mo’ between James “MF” Bunton and Dap “the Man” Morrison. Lots of other grudge matches also went on and a “GO..OD TI..ME” was had by all that attend.

Bunton had said that Dap better have his “A” game ready. Well it didn’t look like either driver would survive round one of the “Battle of Statesville”. Dap was ready to go with his Gibbs built ’57 Chevy and Bunton was late getting to the line (image that?) for round one in his Stroupe built ’96 Corvette.  It would be a “Pinks” style hand start and no times on the board. Both complete “hell mary. Pro mod” burn outs and that’s when trouble developed on the Morrison and Rucker Chevy. After testing all day the new 632 refreshen Steve Vance power plant Dap’s transmission broke, thus giving Bunton and the boys the round one single win. Too much NoS at one  time caused JB’s ’96 to go up in smoke. It wasn’t pretty, but he got the “W”. So, now what are we going to do? The young gun “Greg Patilio, Jr. with his Stroupe built ’55 Chevy and Par Racing Engines 632 stepped up to challenge the “Corvette Man” Bunton for round two. The tree would now be a 4 tenths Pro start and no times still  on the board. Bunton got the jump off the start, but “Lil” Patilio, Jr. would flex the muscles on his 632 to get around Bunton. This now even the score up to one win a piece and would set up a dramatic “Grudge” final. The boys went to work tuning up JB’s Fulton built 632 for this final and deciding match run. Bunton would again get the advantage off the start and this time Patilio could pull around him for the win. The “Battle of Statesville/Charlotte” went to James Bunton and the Boys, now  the talk can start for  next year’s rematch.
